The R18+ legislation made an important step earlier tonight, passing through the Senate unamended. This all but assures an R18+ rating will be available for video games when it comes in to effect on January 1, 2013.

“These are important reforms over 10 years in the making,” said Jason Clare, Minister for Home Affairs, “The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material”

After the classification comes in to effect, it will be up to the individual states to implement the adult rating as they see fit. The ACT is aiming to be the first jurisdiction to enact the classification, while South Australia is currently considering restricting both MA15+ and R18+ games to adults.
