Nintendo Direct: 24/10/14 – 50 Things You Didn’t Know About Super Smash Bros For Wii U

With Super Smash Bros For 3DS well out and the wait for Super Smash Bros For Wii U feeling longer by the day, Nintendo’s latest Direct special was a 35 presentation focusing on 50 things deemed must-see, and there sure as hell were some surprises to boot.
Beginning with the differing content between the two versions, the Wii U version of the game will feature significantly more content than the 3DS counterpart, mostly in the way of bringing back quite a lot of the modes and features implemented in Super Smash Bros Brawl. For instance, Masterpieces & Stage Creator are back, as is Event Battle and a greater variety of match types (such as Coin Battle, Special Smash and much more). The game will also feature a greater selection of music, and the ability to choose how often you want songs played. Though quite a few of the modes have also received some improvements over previous iterations. For instance – Stage Creator takes advantage of the Wii U Gamepad’s Touchscreen & All Star Battle now plays in reverse chronological order (so newer characters are first to be fought).
Instead of Smash Run, Wii U Smash Bros will feature Smash Party. The concept is similar (travel around, gain strength and take part in a final battle), but instead of traversing a world, you take part in a board game. The stages of Wii U Smash will be significantly more complex – with special focus placed on newly announced stages based on The Great Cave Offensive from Kirby Superstar & Jungle Hijinx from Donkey Kong Country Returns. In Great Cave Offensive, the map is large, with specific “danger zones” to allow for environmental damage. In Jungle Hijinx, you can battle in the foreground and background simultaneously. Otherwise, stages are now larger than their 3DS counterparts, and there’s more banter and dialogue between the Star Fox team and between Pit & Palutena, which was confirmed in this Direct.
As for new content for the Wii U game, the game is confirmed to support 8-player matches! This comes with a limited number of playable stages (mostly the larger stages), and this mode cannot be played online. Though speaking of stages, a Miiverse stage was announced as upcoming content – which will feature Miiverse drawings from the Smash Bros community in the background of the stage. Two more stage specific bosses were also announced – Metal Face from Xenoblade Chronicles, and the one character always thought too big for the game, Ridley from the Metroid series. Unlike most of the other bosses, once Ridley is defeated by a player, he will then join that players side to take down their opponents.
Some more information was also shared about how the 3DS and Wii U versions would interact with one another. Aside from the 3Ds version a supported controller by the game, you’ll be able to share your customized characters to the Wii U game – both Mii characters and custom variants of the existing characters. Finally, one returning character was announced as free DLC for those who’ve purchased and registered both versions of the game (much like with the Premium Soundtrack offer) – Psychic Pokemon phenom Mewtwo! The character will be available for both versions of the game.
Otherwise, another entertaining direct with something for just about everyone. December 6th is still looking further and further away.
