The previously announced Penny Arcade Expo will be coming to Melbourne for 2013 and 2014. The event will be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds on July 19-21 2013, confirming details that had previously leaked. The confirmation was made at the Game Connect Asia Pacific 2012 conference by Penny Arcade President Robert Khoo and Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher.

With major chiptune festival ‘Blip’ taking a break for the foreseeable future, chiptune fans can’t be blamed for having a slight hole in their hearts. Australian and Japanese fans, however, can rest easy with the announcement of ‘Square Sounds’, a new festival to carry forward Blip’s legacy.
This new celebration of all music chip related will begin its tour in Melbourne February 15th and 16th next year with a local and international line-up. “There are so many great chipmusic artists that have never performed in Australia before,” said Kristy Dossor, key organiser of Square Sounds (as well as the recurring Melbourne event ‘SoundBytes’), “Working with the Cheapbeats team from Tokyo and our experience with Blip will make Square Sounds something that those familiar with Blip Festival will love, while also incorporating some fresh ideas. We have some amazing talent lined up that will feature not just chipmusic, but also some other stylistically similar artists.”

In yet another blow to the local game industry, we’ve just recieved word that Melbourne-based publisher/distributor THQ Asia Pacific is set to close its doors in the coming months, with Queensland-based distributor All Interactive Entertainment set to pick up their products from an unspecified date. AIE also happen to handle the Capcom products THQ used to handle (a recent change over, mind you), as well as THQ’s products in New Zealand. This comes a matter of weeks before the last big title THQ had to release for the year, WWE 13. Continue reading »
Earlier this month, we reported on the ever popular Penny Arcade Expo making its debut outside of America and hitting our little island home. While we knew it’d be hitting in 2013, we didn’t know the two other important details: that being where in the country it’d be hitting, let alone when exactly in 2013 it’d be happening. And of course, it’s been kind of a popular debate, with people sorta guessing that it was either Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to be host city, with the odd suggestion of something like Adelaide or Tasmania. Well, fret no more as it’s pretty much all but confirmed that not only will PAX Australia be hitting the country in July, but it’ll be hitting the coolest damned city in the country, Melbourne! If you’re in Melbourne, there’s a couple of extremely rad events happening. The first (and by far the more obvious) is the 2012 AFL Grand Final. No idea how that’s gonna play out just yet, but if that’s not enough, there’s another crazy event going on. That being the second big fighting game tournament of the year, Battle Arena Melbourne, hosted by your friends and ours at Couch Warriors. There’s still plenty of time to get involved if you haven’t already! Continue reading »
With the Penny Arcade Expo happening over in Seattle, the last thing anyone here in Australia expected was any announcements related to then. But in a surprising turn of events, the first PAX to be held outside of the United States was announced, and it’ll be coming our way. Continue reading »
EA Australia’s two big Melbourne studios, Iron Monkey and Firemint, have recently merged their operations to become the Firemonkeys. The two studios already shared offices, with the Firemint team moving to the St Kilda Road building that housed Iron Monkey not long after their acquisition from EA, so one could argue that such a step was long since on the cards.
