Published by Jason on January 2, 2015 NG+ Game of the Year 2014 – Jason’s Top Five

This week, the New Game Plus cast and crew reveal their favourite games of the year. To close the week off, New Game Plus’ big boss Jason O’Callaghan gives his verdict on the best games of 2014.

While many seem to think 2014 was a disappointing year in gaming, it is all a matter of perspective. The offerings on the now current-gen systems weren’t as risky and solid as those in previous years, but no more so than the ‘overhang’ years of any other generation. Then there was ‘the Troubles,’ which showed again that humanity is not quite ready for reasonable discourse on the internet. It was, however, a chance for the Wii U to shake off the early wobbles and hit its stride, and it most definitely did that.

To continue that theme, Japanese developers have embraced the Unreal Engine and shattered every single “brown Unreal game” joke you can make. While there were previously Japanese games made using Epic’s toolset, most notably all of Suda51’s recent offerings and the brilliant Asura’s Wrath, there are some big games which made the move to the engine: D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-, Kingdom Hearts 3 and, in a big coup, both Street Fighter V and Tekken 7.

With a gaming compass firmly skewed to the East, you would not have be disappointed with this year at all, and chomping at the bit for 2015, even if my list isn’t hugely representative of that fact. With that said, let’s do this. Continue reading »

Published by Jason on January 10, 2014 NG+ GOTY 2013 – Jason’s Favourite Things

This week, the New Game Plus cast and crew have revealed their favourite games of the year. To wrap this week up, our host Jason talks about some of his favourite things of the year.

I pondered for a long while how to start this piece that didn’t sound entirely negative, but gave up in the end. Despite the hyperbole and hype of a new console generation, 2013 wasn’t a great year for games, at least in comparison to 2012.

We saw the mobile marketplaces fall even further into pits of cheap clones and freemium games, the indie game delivered some memorable experiences while continuing to elude its true potential, and the big boys decided that $100 is still too low a price for a game, so they started adding paid consumables too. And don’t even get me started on how Sony pissed away 6 months of free positive PR. How bleak a picture that paints.

That said, it’s all about the games, and always will be. And while a lot of titles were obviously phoning it with the release of the ‘next gen’ consoles, there were some quality games on show. So here’s a rundown of my favourite gaming things of 2013. Continue reading »

Published by Jason on September 5, 2013 Coalition Backs Down From Mandatory Internet Filter (Updated)

LNP logo[Update] Hours after releasing a policy paper outlining an opt-out internet filter, the Coalition has backed away from the policy. Opposition Communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull released a statement saying that today’s announcement was incorrect, ”The policy which was issued today by was poorly worded and incorrectly indicated that the Coalition supported an “opt out” system of internet filtering for both mobile and fixed line services. That is not our policy and never has been.

The correct position is that the Coalition will encourage mobile phone and internet service providers to make available software which parents can choose to install on their own devices to protect their children from inappropriate material.”

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott blamed a lack of “quality control” for the error, reports ABC News.

Earlier in the day, Turnbull defended the opt-out filter on Triple J’s Hack program. He said in a tweet that, “I read policy shortly before going on @triplej I did my best to make sense of it, until I could ensure it was authoritatively corrected.”

Published by Jason on May 28, 2013 Hands On: The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

The XCOM series has seen a recent resurgence, buoThe-Bureau-XCOM-Declassified-logoyed largely by the success of Firaxis’ brilliant XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The mix of turn based squad tactics and resource management worked superbly to immerse you in the universe that XCOM takes place in, and the permanent death of your squadmates added to the gravity of your tactical decisions.

2K’s other offering in the XCOM world is The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, which started its life as a first person shooter, but now takes the form of a squad based third person shooter. Now, before the collective eye roll, it’s important to note that, while there are definite similarities to the main TPS series doing the rounds, The Bureau easily feels like a valid part of the XCOM series.

Published by Jason on January 3, 2013 Opinion – The Warding Dead

If one thing has surprised me this year, it has been the amount of ‘sleeper’ hits that have been released. This is perhaps best demonstrated by Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, a point and click adventure game based in the universe of the popular comic and television series. Rarely does a licensed title illicit favourable reviews, and yet TWD has claimed many GOTY crowns, including the New Game Plus crown.

Yet despite this, I can’t help but feel that the praise is misplaced this time around. Continue reading »
